ROWING REGATTA
AT TINAROO
On Saturday
October 13, the Cairns Rowing Club staged its inaugural Regatta
at Lavander Hill (www.iig.com.au/lavenderhill/ ) on the shores of
Lake Tinaroo. Clubs from Townsville and Innisfail were invited to
compete and took the opportunity to enjoy an excellent event. Local
schools, TAS and St Mary's also took part. The lake shores at Lavander
Hill have good access for boats and crews with plenty of room for
spectators.
Our hosts John
and Jan put on lunch and made all visitors feel welcome. Their establishment
is an excellent venue for a rowing regatta, with large shade trees
providing a backdrop for a picnic atmosphere. We even had a visit
from a local Platypus, grazing in the disturbed water.
Rowing events
took place throughout the day, including some very close racing
between the clubs. The men's and women's open 8's were a highlight,
both won by the Cairns Club, which ultimately won the regatta on
points.
Jim Chapman,
mayor of Atherton made the medal presentation and indicated that
he would like to see a club from the Tablelands compete in the next
Tinaroo Regatta.
Final point
scores were: Cairns - 70, Innisfail - 51 and Townsville - 24.
Club President
Peter Thoren: It represents the culmination of several years
work. We've proven we can support and host a regatta and this will
mark the beginning of new opportunities (for rowers in the Far North).
