In 1768 Lt.
James Cook set sail on a voyage of discovery from Plymouth, England
in a Whitby Collier, HM Bark Endeavour. That voyage took him around
the world in three years, in which he discovered and charted a large
part of the southern lands. The original ship was nothing more than
a common coal carrier that plied the north seas. The research and
construction of the replica took twice as long as Cook's voyage.
Today Endeavour
has been recreated to exacting standards and has sailed on her own
voyage around the world. Already having sailed to ports in Australia,
New Zealand, South Africa, Britain, both east and west coasts of
North America, Canada, and a return trip to New Zealand (Taken from
the "Project History" section of the Endeavour
Replica website)
